crown and a coronet signified the Queen. The
design of the knight came from the Greek horse of
the Eglin Marbles. Howard Staunton commissioned
Nathaniel Cook in 1849 to design the Chess set
which is used in all international traditional
Chess competitions. The height of the King in the
Staunton set is usually about 9.5 cm (3.75 inches)
and the boards have 5.5cm, (2.25 inch) cells. On
March 1, 1849 Nathaniel Cook first registered the
pattern. Prior to that, the pieces most commonly
used were called the St. George design chessmen,
followed by the Calvert, Edinburgh, Lund and
Merrifield designs. Cook registered his wooden
chess pattern under the Ornamental Designs Act of
1842. Howard Staunton was a Europe's leading
player. The Staunton knight represented the
powerful ideas associated with the horses of the
Elgin Marbles. The Knights as a symbol have come
to represent the virtues of gallantry with their
mane and tail with refinement sculpted and flowing
in the breeze. Their features have been delicately
accented in the Staunton chess set. Phidias an
architect, painter, designer and mathematician was
the sculptor who worked on the Parthenon.
